In the conversation about creating wellness opportunities for Indigenous communities, cultural activities also need to be considered.
For Indigenous communities, reconnecting with culture is more than a personal journey—it’s a vital step toward preserving traditions, strengthening identity, and fostering wellness.
At Indigenous Sport & Wellness Ontario (ISWO), we believe in creating spaces for Indigenous people to learn about and celebrate their heritage. One of our most inspiring examples of this is our Indigenous astronomy workshop, held virtually in December 2024 and 2025.
This unique workshop brought together participants from around the world to explore the Haudenosaunee perspective on the cosmos. Led by Samantha Doxtator, an accomplished speaker who has shared her sister Sasha’s groundbreaking work at the prestigious Hayden Planetarium, the session blended traditional Indigenous knowledge with modern science. It was a powerful reminder of the depth and richness of Indigenous ways of knowing.
Putting It Into Perspective
The Haudenosaunee view of space offers a lens that connects the stars to stories, teachings, and a deep understanding of the natural world. By integrating this perspective with contemporary astronomy, the workshop highlighted how Indigenous knowledge systems can complement and enhance modern scientific approaches. For attendees, it was an opportunity to see the universe in a new light that honours both tradition and innovation.
These workshops are educational experiences that reclaim culture. For Indigenous participants, they provide a chance to reconnect with ancestral knowledge that may have been disrupted by colonialism. For non-Indigenous attendees, they offer a window into the beauty and complexity of Indigenous cultures, which fosters understanding and respect.
ISWO's Role
We are committed to creating opportunities like this because we know how transformative they can be. Reconnecting with culture strengthens communities, builds confidence, and inspires the next generation to carry these traditions forward. Whether it’s through sports, wellness programs, or cultural workshops, ISWO's goal is to empower Indigenous people to thrive while sharing their stories with the world.
As we look to the future, we’re excited to continue offering programs that celebrate Indigenous knowledge and traditions. The success of our Indigenous astronomy workshop is a testament to the power of cultural connection. Together, we can ensure that these stories and teachings shine as brightly as the stars above.
