From September 26–28, 2025, the Building Our Bundle Conference brought youth, families, and communities together for a transformative land-based cultural camp in Neebing and Thunder Bay. Hosted by Indigenous Sport & Wellness Ontario’s (ISWO) Standing Bear program, the event fostered healing, learning, and connection through sport and cultural teachings.

Healing and Growth

Participants described the experience as grounding and deeply meaningful. Using the medicine wheel framework, the camp encouraged self-reflection and storytelling, while land-based teachings promoted balance and fulfillment. Youth gained confidence, built friendships, and discovered the power of sport as a tool for life skills and motivation.

Youth Engagement

Young attendees left inspired to bring land-based learning and sport back to their communities. Many saw themselves as leaders, motivated by cultural teachings and the success they witnessed during the event. The conference highlighted the potential of youth to drive positive change when equipped with the right tools and support.

Community Impact

The camp strengthened bonds across generations and communities. Through laughter, recreation, and cultural sharing, participants were reminded that these programs are not only educational but also vital for mental wellness and reconciliation.

Looking Ahead

The overwhelming feedback emphasized the importance of expanding land-based programming. Participants see these camps as essential for healing, cultural preservation, and inspiring the next generation.

As one participant shared, “The teachings on the land felt safe and healed me.”

Another noted, “Sport and recreation are vital, and without them, I struggled.”

The Building Our Bundle Conference demonstrated the transformative power of bringing youth and communities together on the land. With continued support, these programs will grow, reaching more youth and contributing meaningfully to reconciliation and community wellness.

The Standing Bear program, led by ISWO, empowers Indigenous youth through leadership development. It offers opportunities to build confidence, gain essential skills, and connect with their culture.

By fostering leadership, resilience, and connection to cultural roots, the program creates opportunities for youth to thrive and become agents of positive change in their communities. To learn more and see upcoming Standing Bear events, click here.
